The President

Dear Sir,

For your office first; I honor you! And much more so, for the plain Christian course you have pursued in your administration. Were it not for a humble trust in a Divine overruling power; I should feel greatly alarmed for the safety of my country- just at this present crisis.

Do you Sir, not forsee some danger from Catholicism spread as its numbers are, all over the Union. They follow and obey their Priests, implicitly and they again their heads, so that one Man can cause the uprising of this entire body of Secret sworn hordes, sworn to destroy the Heretic and think that they are doing God service!

About ten years ago, when we resided in New Hampshire, a Mr. White while travelling, in passing through Whitewater, heard something said of a beautiful New Catholic Church, being a Master Builder, expressed a wish to see it and was told that he was not allowed, but while walking past, he fixed his eye upon it, and continued approaching- being fully absorbed in the Building. When suddenly he found himself looking down into the basement. A priest stood there beside an open box of weapons, and a man beside him. One was unpacking and the other was polishing pistols and cutlasses and knives and he stood in astonishment, watching their movements.

When he suddenly received a blow that nearly prostrated him! Turning, he beheld a powerful Irishman and being himself a powerful man, he levelled him with one blow. When suddenly thinking; lept back to the window to see what effect the outcry of the man had on those within. The Weapons, box and all had disappeared, but the men!

One of our good Brothers in the Church mentioned these particulars to a man that he had many times befriended, an Irish Catholic. He was silent for a time, but on being urged, at length said – “Well, the Catholics would have risen and massacred the Protestants, ere this, the time was appointed, but this trouble about the Know Nothings has prevented it and put it back for a little – but it will come, and much sooner than you think, and where will you be; I will be off on one side.”

From this, and other circumstances – I have no doubt in my mind but that every Catholic Church contains a sufficient amount of arms for its members and if this is the case it is a fearful state of things, for here in the North we have no arms.

We have a daughter married to a young lawyer, the son of a lawyer residing in St. John’s, New Brunswick who in her last letter stated that there was much talk there about a report, that the Catholics were intending to rise and murder all Protestants on the Tenth of March next, but of the truth of it, they are not saying! It is possible that the 4th of March may be the time specified with regard to the United States. And if this is permitted to reach your hand, in safety, you may have time to guard not only your own well being but that of Washington.

It is possible that the meetings of these Fenian Bretheren are all connected with this plot and Maximilian being placed where he is, looks ominous, and this pouring out of Emigrants from Ireland by the thousands in the dead of winter is no doubt the work of the Pope. Our people are asleep with regard to this matter. Hence our danger.

I know by experience, Honored Sir, we have every cause to trust Him! Who’s Eye, never sleeps, nor slumbers. When the first Iron Clad Reb ram made its appearance, doing such havoc in our little Fleet, it then seemed to me, that unless the Lord interposed for us, that our cause was lost. I was enabled to ask, nothing doubting and praised be His Name, how quickly He came to our rescue. This encouraged me to ask in an other almost similar case and with equal success- bless the Lord, and I was emboldened to go to the Lord with the cause upon the High Seas, of that daring Pirate Semms, in this instance, the answer did not come too quickly – but when it did come how my soul overflowed with joy and gratitude.

Finding he had made his escape I then was enabled to ask that he might not again molest us as a Pirate. Thus far the good Lord has heard and answered – and I doubt not will continue to do so – help me to render him suitable praise – for myself I am truly thankful to be able to to say I have no fears of death. Yet for others I fear much. I know the Lord is able to put to flight the armies of the Alien, and if they are plotting a midnight assassin on so stupendous a scale – my trust is that He will lay His hand on all the Leaders. It has been on my mind to write you what is in my heart with regard to this subject – for some days. It is now done and I am thankful. May His blessing accompany it – and bring good out of it in some way. May our civil and Religious rights be preserved to us and our children is the fervent prayer of
                                                                                        Your humble servant
                                                                                                 Mrs. Louise Harrison

To the President
P.S. Feb. 16   The rumor of those two Rebel Rams being lent out by France is truly appalling in connection with the above and if it should prove true, unless the good Lord interpose for us, ours is a hopeless cause. I enclose this under cover to Senator Doolittle- thinking that it may go more safely – tho he knows nothing of its contents. If this reaches you privately, as a token thereof please enclose me a photograph immediately of yourself or a paper if that takes too much time. The former would be preferred L.H.
This is a keystroked version of a letter written by Louisa Harrison to President Lincoln. Charles T. Wilcox, author of "The Transformation of The Republic," came into possession of this and other correspondence in the original handwriting.
